Ecuadorian international soccer player Marco Angulo has tragically passed away at the age of 22, confirmed the Ecuadorian Football Federation in a statement.
"The Ecuadorian Football Federation expresses its deepest condolences over the death of Marco Angulo, who, with his talent and dedication, represented our country at every opportunity," the statement read. "Marco was not only an exceptional player, but also a wonderful teammate. His loss brings great sorrow to our hearts, especially for those of us who traveled with him on countless journeys, training camps, and matches."
"Rest in peace, Angulito."
Angulo, a midfielder on loan to Ecuadorian club LDU Quito from MLS side FC Cincinnati, had been in intensive care at the hospital following a car crash on October 7. According to Ecuadorian outlet *El Universo*, Angulo sustained head and lung injuries in the accident and underwent multiple surgeries.
The crash also claimed the life of Independiente Juniors defender Roberto Cabezas, as well as a friend of the players.
Angulo’s last match for LDU Quito was on October 6, just one day before the tragic crash.
FC Cincinnati expressed its heartbreak over the loss, stating, "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Marco—husband, father, brother, son, friend, and teammate. He was a joyful, kind young man who lit up every room he entered. Our entire club grieves this tragedy, and we are keeping his family in our thoughts and prayers. He was a cherished member of the FC Cincinnati family, and he will be deeply missed."
Angulo had made two appearances for the Ecuador national team, playing in friendly matches against Iraq and Australia.
LDU Quito also paid tribute to the player, saying, "His death is an irreplaceable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts."
